The Right to Information Act 2005 is a law enacted to promote transparency and
accountability in the working of the government. It replaces the Freedom of
Information Act 2002. The Act provides for the right of citizens to access information
from any public authority in India, subject to certain restrictions. It also provides a
framework for the compilation, maintenance and dissemination of information held by
a public authority. The Act provides for the designation of public information officers,
who are responsible for providing access to information to citizens.
